Neon Genesis Evangelion is a mecha series by Gainax that works to deconstruct a number of ideas present in mecha series. In particular, it looks at what would actually happen if adolescents were given the controls of such weapons and left to fight cosmic horrors.

Inspirations and Derivative works[]
The main inspirations for this show were Devilman and Space Runaway Ideon, but obviously there are some non-anime influences like the works of Lovecraft, and Christian beliefs in general.
Pretty much everything made since this show is in some way a reaction to it, whether that be in terms of character design, plot concepts, or general influence.
